Overview:

The upper Mustang camping trek is the ultimate gateway to the mysterious world of the old Buddhist Kingdom of Mustang, also called Lo. Once forbidden and isolated from the rest of the world for decades, the area was able to evolve within its own distinctive culture and rich traditions closely tied with Tibet. This moderate, lesser known trek passes through one of the driest regions of Nepal and provides spectacular mountain scenery.

Schedule Details

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu 1300m
  • Flying to Kathmandu is in itself an exciting and memorable experience. On a clear day, you will get a panoramic view of the snow-capped mountains. After completing the visa formalities, collect your luggage downstairs. As you exit the terminal, you will be welcomed by our representatives. From the airport, you will be transferred to your booked hotel in Kathmandu. On reaching, you can either relax in your room or go for a walk exploring the streets.
  • In the evening, we host a welcome dinner with cultural entertainments.

Day 02: Preparation Day in Kathmandu
  • The managing Director of our company will meet you at the hotel and provide more information about the adventure. Your dues must be cleared before commencing the trip. Later in the afternoon, you are free to roam around the city. We will finalize all the paperwork and make a final check of the equipment. In case you have missed any, you can buy them in the market.
  • While we take care of your paperwork, you will have time to explore the city at your own pace. In case you are interested in guided sightseeing in heritage sites, we are pleased to offer the service.

Day 03: Fly to Pokhara
  • After breakfast at the hotel you will drive to Kathmandu and get transferred to Tribhuvan airport for a short flight of (25 minutes) to Pokhara. Pokhara is a tourist paradise full of natural and cultural heritage sites; such as lakes, caves and Buddhist and Hindu temples, along with the backdrop of the majestic Annapurna Range. The city of lakes, welcome you to this beautiful city.
  • Upon reaching Pokhara, you will have free time to explore the city at your own pace. There are different activities to experience around the place. Hiring a boat for an hour and experiencing boating in Phewa Lake and Trekking around the lake are the best options to explore the touristic town of Pokhara.
  • A trekking to Pame and enjoying the lake view is popular among travelers. Or, you can trek to the hill station in Sarangkot.
  • If you are interested in sightseeing in heritage sites, we will accompany you to explore the International mountain museum, Peace Stupa and caves around the city.

Day 04: The Forbidden Kingdom 2743m
  • After breakfast, you will fly to Jomsom (2700m); headquarter of Mustang district, which takes around 25 minutes from Pokhara airport. The city is mostly inhabited by the Thakali people and you will have Himalayan landscapes all around you.
  • You will have lunch in Jomsom and get yourself ready to start the adventure. Today you will trek to Kagbeni (2900m) which takes around 2 hours.

Day 05: The Holy Temple of Muktinath 3800m
  • A sunrise view in the morning is worth en route to Muktinath (3800m) just after a few kilometers of riding. Continue your trek uphill leaving the valley down through the pine forests. The majestic mountains smile far beyond the barren hills along the way.
  • It takes around approx. 5 hours trek (20km) until you reach the holy town of Muktinath situated on the lap of Massif Mt Annapurna. The city is full of hotels, cafes, restaurants, banks, monasteries and horses. On reaching, you will visit the holy temple of Muktinath 5 minutes away from the central market. Muktinath is the temple representing both Hindu and Buddhist culture in the region.
  • In the evening, explore the place on your own and feel the ‘ding-dong’ sound coming from the temple.

Day 06: Beautiful Chele 3050m
  • In the morning, leaving the holy Muktinath and being blessed, we continue the trek towards the valley down. Today you will gradually descend to Chele (3050m) which is 18 km from Muktinath. When you reach Chuksang at 9,678 feet (2,950 m), dominated by a crumbling Dzong or fortress, you'll see clusters of ancient cave dwellings high up on the dramatic rock facing across the Kali Gandaki river. As you continue on, you'll notice how the culture becomes noticeably more Tibetan. Protective cross-shaped amulets (Zor), on the walls of the houses are hung and said to capture evil spirits and protect the inhabitants of the household.
  • Finally you will reach Chele and explore the place and nearby monasteries on your own.

Day 07: Trek to Syanboche 3800m
  • Be prepared for a harder day of trek today. You'll need to cross two passes, Taklam La (11,889 feet/3624 m) and Dajori La (12,253 feet/ 3735 m). However the views are worthy. On the way, enjoy great views of mountains like Tilicho, Yakawa Kang, and Damodar Danda, as well as passing through the dramatic Ramchung Cave.
  • Descend further to the valley below and reach Samar village. From here, trek along a trail above the village and reach a mountain ridge. Next, descend on a steep trail to a stream and finally reach Syanboche (3800m), your overnight stop.

DAY 08: TREK TO DHAKMAR 3820M
  • There will be another couple of high passes to cross today. You will begin by ascending to the Yamda La, at 12,631 feet (3850 m). On the way, pass by a few teahouses, chortens, and beautiful villages with monasteries. Trek through the alpine landscapes and barley fields, and reach Nyi Pass, at 13,156 feet (4010 m). From here, descend again to Ghami, which is one of the biggest villages in the Lo region. Continue on to the final destination of the day, the village of Dhakmar (3820m), which is surrounded by beautiful irrigated fields and rewarding hospitality of the people.

DAY 09: LO MANTHANG 3770M
  • The trail today begins by descending to a canyon and crossing a Kali Gandaki river, before turning uphill to the Lo La Pass, at 12,959 feet (3950 m). From the top of the pass, admire the views of beautiful, walled Lo Manthang village. From the pass, descend to Lo Manthang admiring the stunning views of the Himalaya, including Nilgiri, Tilicho, Annapurna I, Bhrikuti Peak, and Damodar Kunda (pond).

DAY 10: REST DAY
  • We will spend the rest of day grasping all that the valley has to offer today visiting the monasteries of Chode and Jampa. Other possible hikes today include visiting the Namgyal Gompa.

DAY 11: TREK TO TANGE 3320M
  • At first, the trek descends to the Ghechang khola and goes up to 3800m and once again descends before reaching Tange. We will camp near Tange and also visit the remote village of Tange with its remarkable architecture and culture, especially its wonderful Chorten line.

DAY 12: TREK TO TETANG 3050M
  • It’s a long day as we encounter many switchbacks. Along the arid mountain valleys and dramatic caves, we reach Tetang overnight.

DAY 13: TREK TO MUKTINATH 3800M
  • Today you'll start your journey back to Muktinath, first heading south towards Ghami. Although you'll be retracing your earlier route, you'll be treated to great views of the Himalaya in front, so keep an eye on the road and enjoy the trek!
  • As you return to the Kali Gandaki River, brace yourself for the local afternoon winds, as the deep Kali Gandaki gorge is a wind tunnel that channels the warmer air from the lowlands up to the heights above. You'll reach Muktinath in the late afternoon.

DAY 14: ONE MORE DAYS IN HIMALAYAS
  • In the morning, take a horse and ride yourself to the famous Hindu temple, THE MUKTINATH TEMPLE. Explore the Hindu culture from the arts and architecture. Later in the afternoon, explore the nearby hill station to catch the best view of Annapurna range.
  • In the evening, you will drive back to Jomsom and rest yourself at a comfortable hotel.

DAY 15: FLY TO POKHARA
  • After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport for your flight to the 2nd biggest tourist city of Nepal, Pokhara. It has become a very important city since the start of trekking in Nepal. The area is situated in a subtropical valley and consists of some lakes.
  • The very popular Phewa Lake is also quite close to your hotel. You can walk by foot or rent a cycle and explore the Lake side. Boating in Phewa Lake is also very popular among the travelers.

DAY 16: FLY TO KATHMANDU
  • After breakfast in the morning, you will be transferred to the domestic airport in Pokhara for your flight back to Kathmandu. On reaching Kathmandu; you will have sightseeing activities in the UNESCO site in Patan. Patan is full of ancient arts and architecture which is situated in Lalitpur district of Kathmandu valley. The square is a UNESCO site with pagoda and Shikhar style monuments. The carvings are so fine and perfect from every angle.

DAY 17: UNESCO SIGHTSEEING IN KATHMANDU
  • Today you will have sightseeing in Heritage sites around the Kathmandu Valley.
  • A short drive from the hotel takes you to Basantapur, known as Kathmandu Durbar Square. Explore the arts and architecture of ancient Nepal that are finely crafted in the monuments. Visit the Kumari house and learn about the living Goddess, “Kumari.”
  • Later you will be taken to Swayambhunath, also known as monkey temple. It is another UNESCO site in Kathmandu valley. There are seven in total. Swayambhunath is a Buddhist temple situated on a hilltop inside the Kathmandu valley. The temple is full of monkeys, monasteries, statues, visitors and some restaurants which give a 360 view of the Kathmandu valley.
  • In the evening we host a farewell dinner with cultural entertainments.

DAY 18: FINAL DEPARTURE
